We sold our home but weren’t sure where we should move to. We decided on building a new home for our family. This is how we organized our big move while building our new home. Check out our first episode on how we sold our home here!
We have just finished moving out of our lovely home and into my in-law’s basement while we build our new home. Our permit just came out!!! The spec house we have been building just sold. We finalized details on the custom home we will be starting to build soon. And even better, Ryan is pouring footings this week on our own home to start building. I finally feel like things are starting to come together!!!
Getting settled in
After endless trips up and down the stairs while moving into my in-law’s basement suite, let’s just say I am not looking forward to moving out of their basement in 6 months. We just have too much stuff! It’s tough to plan what our family will need for the next few months. I have to get creative on where to put everything to keep our small space functioning well. This is not the first smaller home we have lived in, so it has come naturally to get creatively organized.
It's important to create a home for everything to clear away the clutter and stay organizedClick To Tweet
We stuffed many of our dressers and bookcases into our in-laws’ already furnished basement suite when we moved in. I was devastated to bring so many cabinets in our already squished space. I can’t handle the clutter. Ryan was sure that this would help us save room in our Big Steel Box while giving us storage solutions to put all of our necessities. After a big “discussion”, turns out he was right. (Wait, did I just say this??? Ryan, are you reading this?;)) The extra dressers provided good storage for all of our clothing, office supplies, and food. We managed to find a place for all of the dressers to go. It’s a little squishy but it’s temporarily functional. And this is so much better than searching through boxes when we are rushing out the door every day!:0

TIME TO RECONNECT
Ryan and I managed to slip away without the children. We even managed to have a decent conversation over dinner without kid interruptions. We often take advantage of appointments and meetings we have together to go out for lunch or dinner. We like to make a date of it. We want to make sure we are still married at the end of all the busy days we are in (check out this post for great ways to stay connected in your marriage). Time to relax and refocus to remember why we like each other once is so important:). What a lovely dinner we had together. This is how we made time to reconnect during the many “disagreements” that happened during the moving process. Moving can be so stressful, we needed to find a way to spend time together and laugh, instead of cry during the process…
THE VISION
We even got a chance to pop into the carpet store to finalize our flooring. We found some that we actually both agree on! That is a miracle in itself! Isn’t is so pretty?!?!
I am sooo excited to see this flooring in my new home! This is a fresh look for me as I haven’t spec’d this look before. I really want to go with a modern farmhouse look, with an industrial twist. Of course, with a busy flooring, we will need to keep the walls soft and pretty with a lovely off-white. Stay tuned by signing up for updated posts as this house continues to take shape!
BUILDING TIP
You’re now at the foundation. It’s a good time to start planning your decor vision. Choose a few pics that you love and base your color and style decisions around the look you are after.
