We sold our home but weren’t sure where we should move to. We decided on building a new home for our family. This is how we are surviving life while we wait for our home to be finished building. Check out our first episode here!
We have been living in my in-laws basement suite for a few months now. They have been incredibly gracious to have us all live in their home while we build our new home. They have been super supportive while having our large crazy family live in their basement suite. I love this special time we are able to spend with them.
Shared spaces can be sweet
It has been a really nice break to not have the responsibilities that come with taking care of a large home. We are making sweet memories while we live here, enjoying beautiful walks, bike rides, and family time playing in the yard. I am learning to breathe and just enjoy life for the first time in years. We are really loving our time here so far.
I am realizing that by living with multiple families, you really can save so much money. One property tax shared utilities and shared property to maintain. If you could figure out a way to share the property with both families equally so everyone feels like they have their own space, sharing a property with people you love may not be so bad…
I really noticed this while I spent 10 days out-of-town this summer. As I stayed with a few fav people, we would share in the cooking, child care, and cleaning responsibilities. It was so nice to carry the load together. the bible says two is better than one… maybe more would be even better?!? I love spending time cooking and cleaning in the kitchen with other momma friends I get along with well. The whole meal can end up successful when you have help.:)
Waiting can be difficult
But as I am waiting for our home to be built, Its hard not to get excited and impatient. I am trying so hard to be patient!:) Thankfully it is starting to take shape! We have a foundation. We even have started framing!!! And being that I can see cows from my view, I really must move forward with the modern farmhouse style for my new home. I know that the farmhouse thing is a bit trendy right now but I look forward to styling my house with a new look. We often have done a Westcoast sorta feel on our new homes. This look is super trendy here on the west coast.;) This time I am looking forward to doing something a little different… even if Ryan is not quite sure about this. He loves the earthy rock on the fireplace and exterior. I am looking forward to shiplap and barn doors. How do you work out your differences while you are renovating? I have learned to pick my battles. And thankfully Ryan is sweet and says with a sigh “how do you want me to build it?”
Look at this fabulous view from my deck!:) I look forward to having coffees and good conversations with my fav people here. I also look forward to the special quiet Jesus time with my Bible and a pad of paper. Moving day still feels so …far… away!;) …trying hard to have patience…
Entertaining
Right now in our stage of life, our lives are so busy with teens coming and going. This comes with very many pick up and drop offs to their friend’s houses or activities. I honestly have to go through a checklist in my head to make sure everyone is where they need to be, and who needs to be picked up from where. Our kids like to have friends come over, but being that we are limited to how many can come over right now, I am finding it difficult to not be able to entertain. It’s been even harder to say no to my kid’s friends coming over. We still have a couple wonderful peeps come to visit, but we are trying to be respectful of the limited space we are in.
I thrive on entertaining and being a hostess with an open door policy. I even love the chaos of teens coming to hang out. But being this season is a break I must take, it gets me dreaming for entertaining in our new home soon!
I may not always have it all together, or a perfectly clean home, but that never stops me from enjoying my company. Click To Tweet
I so am missing having a home to share! Oh well, that will come again soon enough.:)
Building tip
During the framing stage; plan out your electrical layout based on your furniture and cabinet layout, so you have a well-designed space with all the necessary plugins and pendants in place. Remember to remain flexible while building as not everything always goes as planned. Be ready for the unexpected and work with it. It usually works out for the better anyways.
