We all experience clutter and the feeling of too much stuff. As organized as we can be, sometimes the stuff can build up over time and it all can become just too much! Wouldn’t you agree?
I realize it can feel super overwhelming to know where to begin when getting organized, so here is a
Start just with just one room, or one closet at a time (Check out this post on how to get your closets organized) and follow this simple step by step process. Be ruthless or you won’t feel like you got anywhere. I actually like to pretend we are moving to a new home (I happen to have lots of practice in this area) because it makes me think, what do I want to move and what do I actually need to keep? This thought process helps me let go of more stuff, as well as get everything separated into movable bins which can help keep things organized longer.
How to get your room organized
1. Clear out the room you are organizing
Seriously. Take everything out of every cupboard, dresser, shelving unit and move everything out of the room
2. Rearrange your furniture
Rearrange your existing furniture to flow better and remove the furniture no longer needed or is causing more clutter. You may think you need the storage, but by reducing what you own, you may not even need it anymore and you will feel like you have more room to breathe and play in your space.
3. Start separating your items into piles by garbage, giveaway, and keep
On your keep pile, place each of your items into separate categories. Pants with pants, jammies with jammies, lego with lego, books with books…
Make a garbage pile and a separate giveaway pile which makes it easy to dispose of when you are done going through all of your items. Think, “if I haven’t used it in a year, I probably don’t need it…”
4. Place each separated category into its own basket or cabinet
Go to the dollar store or hardware store if needed to find bins or baskets that will help keep your items separate and organized. Labels always too as you and the rest of your household will always know where it belongs.
Put each category away in
Remember to only put away what you will actually use!
5. Get rid of the garbage and the giveaway piles
Unless an item actually belongs somewhere else in your home, do not be afraid to give or throw it away. It’s easy to hold onto too many things we think we may need or has sentimental value. This can cause us to break under the weight of our stuff. It can cause unnecessary stress in our lives. Holding onto items that we may need for “just in case”, actually keeps us from helping someone else who could actually use them!
If this feels like a really difficult process for you to let go of items, ask yourself, “why am I having such a difficult time getting rid of these items?” Acknowledge that these are valid feelings, but it’s ok to move forward and feel the freedom when we have less stuff to maintain and care for.
Having a home for everything we own helps us stay organized. Keeping only what we actually use or need, can feel so freeing, This helps us have a space we can actually enjoy and then we have more room to play and enjoy the ones we love! So, give yourself permission to get organized, breathe and find joy in your home again! What are some ways you like to stay organized, friend?
