Do your kids ask you for a room update? Maybe they have grown up a little and outgrown their bedroom decor? I know my kids ask for an update every couple of years (they must be my kids, because I always look for a change;)). Are you wondering how to start their room update to reflect their personality and your budget?
When we were moving into our new home a couple of years ago, our middle daughter was ready for a change. We tossed around a couple of ideas but it was when we were in a Victoria Secret change room, I was totally inspired by their black and white striped with hot pink!
So, I made up a Pinterest board and we bought a couple of hot pink accessories for Christmas. We even sold a couple of her old pieces that she had outgrown to buy some new accessories. I even found this black and white striped wallpaper just waiting to come home with me!
But of course, when we moved in, there were so many projects to do that I never made it down to the basement to hang the wallpaper for her. Which ended up being a good thing. It wasn’t until our oldest had graduated and being that she was now living on her own grown-up schedule in our house, we decided it would be better for her to move into the basement for our sanity. Our middle daughter would now take her sister’s room, two floors up right across the hall from our room. Our middle was not impressed at losing her quiet cave, so I bribed her with making the room of her dreams. We even managed to finally hang this sparkly textured fabulous wallpaper! She agreed and we spent a day hanging it together which was so fun! We had barely enough wallpaper to fit on our two walls, but we made it!

We followed these simple steps
- Get inspired by creating a Pinterest board where I popped up all the inspiration My Pinterest page
- The inspiration board
- Our room layout
- Make a shopping list with your budget in mind, and buy the necessary accent pieces
- Have a cleaning party while removing and then setting up all the necessary pieces.
As a family, we spent an entire afternoon going up and down… and down and up… and up and down… carrying all the girls’ items to their new rooms. This was the final result;
The after
Our middle desperately wanted a “fainting” chair. So after looking around on some second-hand buy and sell sites, we found this one! It was in great shape but we still used our little upholstery cleaner to clean it nice and fresh. It was the perfect size and price to fit within her birthday budget!
I know, It’s all a bit mesmerizing, but it suites our girlie and her quirky personality just perfectly. By making the accessories the bright color, it makes it simple to switch out the accent color if she tires from the pink so we don’t have to repaint again.
She loved her new room…. until a year later which she announced she wanted it a little more grown-up feeling space. Rather than spending more time and money on a huge update as she still loved the hot pink and the stripes, we rearranged it a bit. Actually, it was her older sister (we must have taught her well;)), who emptied it out with her, reorganized and decluttered her stuff and then rearranged, and put everything back just in time for bed.
We found some great art hanging around our house that worked perfectly to suit with her new hipster style feel.
Thankfully they completed it before we went to bed that night because this was the mess in our bedroom when they emptied her room to reorganize it! (Check out my post here or here with simple steps on how to reorganize your spaces)
The new bedroom update
So, my friend, You don’t have to spend a lot of money to freshen up your space. What I love about this space is it has so many vintage or used pieces mixed with the new. Make your kids part of the process and the budget so they understand what all goes into it, and they will carry on these life skills with them as they grow up too.
