We built a shed to put our tools and valuables in, but when we started constructing it, none of the pieces fit. We learned a valuable lesson as we put it together…
How to purchase the right shed
- Measure out the space available
- Price out different stores and sales to find the right shed based on your size and budget
- Decide if you want wood to stain or paint, or a plastic shed
- Prep and pour the necessary sized concrete pad. Make the concrete a couple feet larger all the way around than the actual shed for a good foundation.
- Purchase and deliver the shed
- Have a few hours set aside, ready with the necessary tools as per the instructions to assemble the shed. Maybe even a few extra helping hands who know what they’re doing.
We purchased a new plastic shed from a big box store. The shed seemed less expensive and simpler to purchase than to build one from scratch. When building a shed, the cost of contracting all the correct trades for a small job may not be worth it financially or timewise. Purchasing a templated wooden shed or a plastic shed may make more sense. Though it still may not be easy to assemble.
The following is a revelation that my middle teen daughter wrote out for you as we built our plastic shed together;
Our Foundation
After starting with the assembly and it didn’t come together, we started over by relaying the foundation of the shed down on the concrete pad we had prepared. The walls didn’t fit the way the store sent them. We had to cut the walls to make them fit properly. We finally build the shed! It should have only taken a couple of hours as it looked really simple, but it took hours! It was still not very sturdy, all because the foundation of the shed did not start off right.
This shed is much like our faith in Christ.
I know you’ve probably heard lots of preachers talk about comparing God to being a solid rock and stuff like that, but it’s because it’s the truth.
If our foundation had been the right size and more sturdy to begin with, we would have finished it sooner, and it would have been more solid. (It would be able to withstand the hardships of life better too!)
Our faith NEEDS a foundation! We as humans are looking for a strong, stable place to live because we want to be safe and feel secure.
But sometimes we put our trust in the wrong stuff, sometimes we even put our foundation in the very evil of sin. Whether it’s a phone or the TV, if you spend too much time on it, it becomes your idol. If that happens then you become like this shed we built; unstable and cheap. But if you put your faith in God, your foundation and your shed (faith) will never fail you.
Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain.Psalm 127:1“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” Matt 7:24-27
-Madison Block
The above post written by my sweet teen daughter was laid on her heart after our adventure in shed building. Ryan and I and Madison spent the day putting it together. (I only edited a few minor things in this post for her).
Where is your foundation?
As we assembled the shed together, Ryan as a builder was frustrated when the pieces didn’t connect well. The foundation was not the right size for the rest of the shed. So he actually had to cut down most pieces to make it fit properly together as we assembled it. We did manage to put it together after a long fun crazy day. It would have been a simple process if it had come with a proper base or foundation in the first place to fit the pieces properly.
Have you found that your life has not come together the way you had dreamed it would?
If our foundation is built solid… we stay strong through the storms of life we go through.
But if our foundation is not structurally sound… your life can easily crumble when the hardships of life happen. It may even make it difficult to build a healthy home.
I pray that your own foundation is laid on the firm foundation of our mighty God and living out His powerful word. Where are you currently putting your foundation? Sign up below for more encouragement right to your inbox!
