HOW I BECAME A DESIGNER

Are you wondering what started this great passion Interior Design passion of mine? Here is a bit of my story…

I loved home decor, even in high school. I dreamed of setting up my own home (maybe that attributed to my getting married so early). I am an artist at heart and come from a long line of homemade artists on both sides of the family. I even just found out my great-great uncle was a published author!

I found myself dreaming of being an interior designer. Especially after I met with an Interior Designer to help me with my colors while we were building our first home. I thought it was like magic the way she could see how my colors I chose didn’t coordinate. She helped me pull everything together with such ease and found me the perfect color for my walls!

As I looked into becoming a designer, I never thought it possible as a young mom. I didn’t dare leaving my family to head into the city to go to school for 5 years and spend all that money we didn’t have to pay for it. I spent most of my days yearning for mama playdates and changing diapers while helping on the odd day with our home building business we ran with my inlaws.

I remember looking around my home wondering the what the decor rules were to know how to decorate my house just like the magazines. I worked on a very tight budget so I would come up with creative ways to decorate cheap.

Using fabric we found on sale to cover my second–hand sofa, sewing new pillow covers over my old throw pillows, finding new/used furniture on the side of the road to take home, and painting everything I could to make it suit our space. Anything to decorate within my tiny budget!

Birthdays and Christmas were special because I would use my gift of $100 cash for new home decor which still never seemed to make my home look like the magazines! I longed for knowing design rules, but no matter what book, magazine or TV show I watched, nothing told me how to achieve the look I was after. So many books I bought would give one or two good pieces of advice but nothing would give me the steps to get there. So whenever our local university ran specialized design courses, I took them!

The evening and weekend courses totally fit within my mama schedule. This way my husband could watch the kids. There was nothing I didnt want to know. I needed to know it all!

I thought by taking these classes, at the very least could help me decorate my home and I would know how to better design our homes we were building for our business. I never dreamed it would go anywhere!

But here I am now, with over 20 years of building, reno, and design experience. I have been certified in Interior Design, Staging and Redesign, and color consulting. We have built and/or moved over 10 times in our 20 years of marriage! I have worked as a local designer with thousands of clients. I have written a book on interior design and love sharing my experience and knowledge with you. Why? Because you matter. Because your home should be a refuge where you feel free to worship and pray and rest and play and make wonderful memories with your family! I want you to feel encouraged to trust the Lord’s plans for your life and commit those dreams to Him. Somehow He makes it all happen, not without a whole lot of work but He definitely clears the pathway to where you are called to be.

I never intended to write a book, but I wanted to complile all of my expertise into one simple, easy-to-apply read for anyone to know how to decorate their own space. I still haven’t been able to find anything else quite like it. Especially because it also includes some heart encouragement… because when your heart is restored, your home is restored too!
